Super Bowl Sunday at Sea

Seahawk- Go get em'

Today was the first of four days at sea as we sail on our way to the American Samoa port. We began the morning with 45 minutes of Tai Chi, moving slowly and deliberately while the ship swayed beneath us. It was a peaceful way to wake up our bodies and minds, and to remind ourselves to be present for the days ahead. Plus it took away some aches and pains from all the walking and especially the sitting as well.

After Tai Chi, it was time for something a little more practical: laundry day. We hauled our dirty clothing to the laundromat and got everything washed, then turned our balcony into a makeshift drying room. In true “cruiser ingenuity” fashion, we strung clothes between two lawn chairs using my camera tripod as a clothesline. With the warm sun and sea breeze, our little balcony quickly filled with shirts and other clothing that fluttering over the water.

Later in the day, the ship shifted into Super Bowl Sunday mode. The game was being projected in two spots - by the pool and in the Universe Theater between the Seattle Seahawks and the New England Patriots.

The two Quarterbacks all set to make history

With the outdoor pool area hot and a bit too humid for our liking, we opted for the comfort of the theater. It turned out to be the perfect choice: cool air, big screens, and the energy of a crowd all cheering (or groaning) together as the plays unfolded. They even set up a buffet in the theater and kept us supplied with drinks while we watched, which made it feel like our own floating sports bar. By the time the final whistle blew the Seattle Seahawks won the game 29-13 for their second ever Superbowl Championship Title. The whole room buzzed with that familiar Super Bowl excitement—even out here at sea. There certainly was more Seahawk fans on board and they were thrilled that they won

This is the some of the reserved tables at the pool area to watch the Superbowl at $100 per person and most seats were in direct sunlight all day. Wow, that must have been darned hot and I am glad we stayed indoors to watch the game.

After the game, Jan and I wandered up to the Explorers Lounge, where they were hosting some evening games. We were one of three couples chosen to take part in a game called “The Perfect Couple.” There was plenty of laughter and a few surprises as we tried to prove how well we knew each other. We didn’t quite take the top spot, but we were happy to come in second—and had a great time doing it. We won a bottle of champagne for participating.

Tomorrow is another sea day, but we have no schedule yet. We could still go to Ukulele lessons or another Tai Chi and Pilates sessions. One way or the other, we will be busy doing something. I will report on our activities in a future blog. Our plan, as it stands now, is simple: relax, enjoy the ship, and let the ocean carry us a little closer to our next port, one quiet mile at a time.
